After the Pulse Nightclub massacre in Orlando in the summer of 2016, under the leadership of playwright Caridad Svich and publisher Zac Kline, over 70 theatre artists created three-minute plays as part of an international theater initiative in the tradition of rapid response. While it is difficult to make sense of such a senseless and horrific act of violence, “After Orlando” offers us an opportunity to strengthen our sense of community, to remind us of theatre’s power to remember, to speak out, to mourn, and to celebrate life. Over 75 colleges and universities as well as theatre companies have responded to this tragedy as an occasion to raise questions about gun control, transphobia, homophobia, and the oppression of people of color. This roundtable will share examples of the “After Orlando” plays and discuss the spectacular power of the international reading scheme. How does the large-scale project work as a local event? What are some of the challenges/advantages of working with “tiny” plays that deal with enormous issues? What responses, experiences, and impact has “After Orlando” had?
